What? on call on weekend? last weekend, my surgical team was on call. normally we have on call on tuesday and friday but the friday prior to that weekend we dont have on call. So, i took that friday afternoon off. After Jumaat prayer i joined this group of people who were on holidays to play bowling.(nape la korang ade byk cuti?). Nak divert skit, that bowling hung-out was fun even though I didn’t score which I normally did in the previous occassions.

Ok, back to my on call story.For those who are not familiar with word ‘on call’, it is the day when the doctors have to work extra hours, but I’m not sure about extra payment. may be dapat kot. We were on call on saturday and sunday. I was a bit reluctant to go. Normally my weekends are full with enjoyment, sluggishness and insomnia. Hmmm…so i skipped saturday on call and do the normal thing lah- tidur. However i was bound with big regret. So i went for Sunday on call (tp still pegi lambat la sbb nk tdo panjang skit, but i went la). One of the best things about working on weekends is we dont have to formally dress. So I was casually dressed lah!

So that day, I did normal on call stuff like admission, order blood tests, X ray then joined the registrar (doctor) to review the patient later on. This is the flow chart of work during on call:

1) Patient arrives at Emergency department or admission patient unit.

2) Nurse will prioritised the patient. Kalau sakit teruk, lagi cepat la doctor tengok cam chest pain. Nurse will also refer patient to different discipline according to their problem, for eg patients with acute abdo pain will be referred to general surgical team.

3) Nurse (yg lain pulak, bukan yg atas tu) yg bertanggungjawab atas patient tu akan paged the appropriate team and she will take blood for routine test if needed.

4)House officers and/or students will admit the patients. they will fill out the admission form.

5) HO and/or student will paged the registrar and they will review the patient together.

6) House officer akan order blood tests or other tests yg relevant as requested by registrar before diagnosis is made. Students akan tolong HO.

7) Appropriate management will be carried out later such as masuk theatre ke, or just monitor in ward etc…

Tengah2 bizi kat ED/APU, my registrar asked me to assisst him for an operation. It was 5 pm. I cant say no because that will reveal my kemalasan and secondly hari tu only one registrar and an HO je for surgical team. So i gotta assisst him so that the HO can monitor the patients in ED/APU.

The operation is called laparotomy for suspected bowel ischaemia.

Its been a while since the last time i put something here. not exactly know what have driven me to write this post. actually i just wanna share something about surgery posting that has been running for a week and i still have 3 more weeks to go. Honestly I hate this posting, not the surgical part per se but the fact that i have to wake up early, going for on-call 2 times in a week and gotta sacrifice my weekend, really bugging me off! I started to think that, yea, its tough! never comes across my mind that to be a doctor is challenging. well it is, fella!

In the gloomy feeling however i can see the best part of it. it is to be able to get all the experiences (not axactly all) and the knowledge in surgery. last week, i assisted a registrar (this is what they call a doctor here) for a diagnostic laparoscopic appendicectomy (removal of appendix using a camera-probe, clip n scissor thru  small cuts made on the abdomen). For the 1st operation, i kinda flopped. I cant handle the camera well. it sounds easy but believe me its not. kalu gerak kiri, image kat TV akan gerak kanan and so on. the registrar quite disappointed until he called up a surgeon to help him out. I was so depressed and that day went all wrong for me. Then, the next day, the similar operation was done. the surgeon (big boss of the team) asked me to assist a registrar (again? sigh!). Agak cuak sikit to say yes but i braced myself to say so. This time, i helped him well. just me n him and a nurse. no need to call a surgeon. yey! my point here is, it doesnt matter if u did badly on ur first time task. Its a learning process. the next time u do it, its gonna be way better.

Yesterday (Saturday) was the post-acute ward round. This is when the surgeon comes to review all the patients that had been seen by his ‘lower rank’ co-workers on the on-call day. So, I woke up early coz i really wanna go. I woke up at 6 and the night before i slept lmbt coz maen table tennis for 3 hours and we (Fred and I) won impressively. hahaha! sorry la kpd opponent team, practice hard ya! ok back to main thing. Niat asal pegi ward round tu sbb nk tunjuk rajin la dpn boss sbb nnt dia yg akan bagi markah prestasi aku tp niat penting nk blaja la. bila sampai kat spital, my house officer (1st/2nd year doctor) didnt turn up. ponteng. so yg datang were the boss, the registrar and 3 students, each from year 4, 5 and 6. So, we gotta do all the house officer’s works including writing the patient’s notes, write the discharge summaries and order blood tests/x ray. I’m not used to all that works, so I guess its a good practice-lah! Memang penat coz to me it was pratically running in the wards. Surgeons memang jalan laju. My knee joints macam nk tercabut. during the ward round, i presented a patient that i admitted during on-call to the boss. the patient got acute pancreatitis secondary to gallstones(radang pancreas disebabkan ‘batu hempedu’,  is it the right word?). mase present tu, the boss tanya byk mende la and I choked! damn! not because i hesitated with my answer but he’s so intimidating. buat aku cuak je. even the registrar pun tergagap-gagap kalu dia tanye lebey2. above all, memang fun la. tp siot je house officer tu x datang.

I quite like surgery but to be a surgeon in the future, hmmm…might be not. But who knows coz sometimes it is terbalik. nak mende tu dpt mende laen!

Last weekened, on 21st April 2007 at Britomart, satu karnival called Malaysian Carnival was successfully held. well, I’m not really sure who was the main organizer but I know some of my frens here were part of the crew. they worked really hard for this. Prior to the event, a dinner with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the VIP was held at Sky City convention on the night eve. this dinner was called Charity Golf TSM. Students were invited to the dinner. memang best dinner ni but the food was not that nice. yang best nye ialah for the students to hang out together plus we got a chance to know students for other parts of New Zealand like from Christchurch, Ottago and Wellington and some from Aussie.

We had  lucky draws. for those who were lucky enough, they received prizes and one student with really good luck received a return flight ticket Auckland-KL. It wasnt me, damn! during the dinner, we had a lot of performances by the students. Auckland students presented traditional dances. they were amazing. I wonder how long they practiced the dance coz they looked pretty good and well synchronized. satu hadiah dberikan kepada team yg buat persembahan terbaik. the winning was the team yang buat tarian Hakka (Maori Warrior dance), I cant remember which team but I think team from Ottago. they receive $NZ 1000.

actually I wanna tallk about Malaysian Carnival but….sambung lain kali lah….

I reached KB around

6 am

. I noticed that KB is not much difference from the last time I saw. Now…how did I get myself home? I know that I must tell somebody in my family to bring me to kampong. So I called my brother who lives in Kubang Kerian. He was shocked when I told him that I was in KB. Even though he just got up and busy getting ready for lecture, he came and drove me home to my parents’ house.

My plan was, to invade the house slowly and talk to my parents like nothing happen. It was after subuh when I got home. I went into the kitchen and I saw my younger brother tengah masak. Dia terkejut but he acted cool. Ceh, saje tak nak buat surprise lah tu. Few seconds later, I heard footsteps from outside the kitchen. It was my mum. So, I just stand by the door. When she opened the door, she saw me. Terkejut giler dia! And she cried. Happy kot yang anak dia sorang ni balik.

After that I went into my dad’s room and I switched on the lights. So, he got up. He saw my glimpse but he thought of somebody else. When I said something then he realized that it was me. My sister yang tengah tidur tersedar and so did my other 2 younger brothers. My sister who lives next door also came because he saw someone got out from a car, running into the house.

Then, startlah sessi bercerita panjang, sessi photo slides. Yang paling best, I ate nasi dagang for my breakfast. My sister prepared it, actually for the night watchers (tiap2 malam ade group yang jaga kampong). Around

10 am

, we planned to go to KB mall. Actually it was my sisters’ birthday, both of them.

We went to KB mall (my sister, 3 brothers and me). Kitorang pegi main bowling!!! Tak sangka yang KB mall ade bowling.

Balik from KB mall, I just sleep. Tired from the long journey…….

Definitely this holiday is not a usual holiday! Full of appreciation. I Love

How I got myself back in

          I was so clueless and so over the top….I planned to make a surprise comeback. I didn’t tell anybody that I would be heading to KL in 2 days time especially my family and not even my close friends. OK it’s getting boring now…to cut the story short, when I reached KL I called my friends and telling them that I’m in KL. They all shocked. I stayed at my friend’s place in Gombak. Even tho’ I know I could easily spend a night at my bro’s place which is in Sepang (dekat dgn KLIA la) but I refused to because he might ruin the whole surprise thingy.

I spent a day in KL with my friends. They brought me to mamak stalls, went to Sg Wang and we had few photoshoots of KL background. Argh!! Bestnye and I couldn’t believe it yet that I was in KL already. After that, I went back to KB by bus. One funny thing happened, I was almost kene tinggal by that bus. Luckily I managed to kejar that bus. Just imagine, I got out from my friends car and ran (knowing that I was late), looking for the bus aimlessly and carrying a laptop bag (my friend help me to carry a heavier bag, heheh..kesian ko Nipi). Oklah..naik bus for about 8 hours and I reached KB. I slept all the way the journey. So darn tired.

Actually panjang lagi citer ni but I have lost my interest to write. Might be continued in another post…..

yey!!! its holiday….i’m having a 2-week holiday now….

u dun have any idea of how ecstatic i was before the holiday start….but now, on my second day of holiday, I’m bored to death!!!

let me think!!!hmm…i think i have a few ideas of how to get out from this goddamit boredom:

1)tdo diwaktu pagi sepuas-puasnye

2)try buat bende baru setiap hari (yesterday i baked jemput2 n goreng pisang!! kire bende baru la tu, hari ni aku baca BBC news..God! i must be in a really terrible time coz reading the world news is like the last thing i wanna do)

3)lepak kat Queen st…plan ni paling best tapi letih nk jalan n skarang ni slalu hujan

4) call rumah on a daily basis, sampai diorang bosan dgr citer aku….

5)try menambah ilmu (duh!!! skema nye plan ni n with flaws)

6) kacau org lain yg x cuti- call or chat or txt diorang sampai diorng meluat ngan aku…

hmmm…i’m sleepy now….continue the list 2moro la…..

x best la kalu asyik hujan n sejuk je….anyhow we managed to take a break and went to rangitoto island last saturday (22 april 06)….its not far from auckland city…all we have to do- pack our lunch, pay the ferry return ticket and get there…..

view dia lawa giler but the island itself not that pretty…yelah byk dgn lava yg dah sejuk…island to sbenarnya x volcano…oh ya..cakap pasal ‘x’ ni teringat lak x men 3 yg nak kuar 23rd may nnt…movie yg aku nnt2 kan…bukan ape pagi td tgh jalan nk g spital nampak billboard x men…excited giler…..ok back to my trip….my frens (saleena, azri and nadia) and i pegi saje2 je….just to get our mind out of system…..island tu mmg terjaga (bersih) and x de sekor binatang pun…kira selamat gak la….from the summit we can see a very nice view of auckland city and the islands surrounding ( tgk la gambar2 dlm album yg aku baru buat)….kitorang amik ferry kul 9.15 pagi and took return ferry at 330 pm…at the island tu kitorg jalan je sampai ke puncak…thru’out the journey…x abih2 aku cakap ‘lawa giler’ even bile nampak view yg sama, ……tho’ jalan byk tp x terase letih pun……

today….31 jan 1.15 am….my third day in auckland…reached here last saturday..the flight was allrite though kinda crap a bit coz it was 10 hours..(hell bored)…..i’m gonnna spend my life for 3 years here…further study (i’m doing twinning programme in med)…..

hmm…auckland..it’s the largest city in nu zealand but nothing compare to KL….nak makan susah..kene blajar masak (EUW!)…nak shopping x de kedai best…mahal lak tu …yg paling x best i’m away from my home country….kinda homesick (gotta admit that)…miss my family, frens, food (3Fs)….but the best parts are the scenery and the weather…yelah…for a malaysian who never been out of m’sia….4 musim tu memang bizarre kot!….currently i dun have my own address yet coz tomorrow hopefully i will  get the keys for my room…..chiou!

i just got my final sem 5 exm result…and that’s the mark for the end of my imu life….i pass …got lotsa thing to do!…..dunno what to do first…argh….konfius…nak balik ke negeri tanah serendah sekebun bunga atau nak settle bende kat KL dulu?…ntah lah…..i never be impulsive before and i think i’ll never be…..ok…just flip a coin!

just wanna update my activities (might be useful for my alibi)

last friday (oct 21)- CNS exam….susah giler….rase cam x study langsung…after that went to KLCC for bukak puasa with my batchmates- rahman, pakcik, fizzi, bal, kash, mantoba, wis, baya, alia, azhana and shieh ning…..best duh kuar ramai2 camtu….cam rombongan cik kiah ke KLCC!

sun (oct 23)- went to KLCC again for bukak puasa with my x farisian frens……since been a while we didnt meet..so lotsa story to tell! fun giler lah….dunno when we can make such reunioun again! (actually not a reunioun, just  a few of retards..he…he)

today (oct 24)- commencement of health issue weeks……buhsan siot!….this week gonna be the most drifted week since my mind is on hari raya break!….homesick….
